The Energy Department today announced a total of $4.4 million for two projects in Michigan and Pennsylvania to support the use of advanced materials and manufacturing techniques in the development of new “low-head” hydropower technologies. The United States has major opportunities across the country to add new hydropower generating capabilities at low-head sites, which operate with a change in elevation between 2 and 20 meters, including waterways at existing non-powered dams, canals, and conduits. According to Energy Department assessments , there is a technical resource potential of more than 50 gigawatts of potential capacity at these low-head sites. The Energy Department today announced a $5 million investment to develop and demonstrate new residential energy efficiency solutions, and that will support building energy efficiency research at universities and colleges. The Department will provide $4 million to support the demonstration of high-impact energy efficiency technologies and practices that can produce 50% energy savings in new homes by 2025 and 40% energy savings in existing homes by 2030. The Department will also award $1 million to American universities to fund student teams that will work in partnership with industry to develop energy efficiency technologies. JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – As a part of the Administration’s effort to increase energy efficiency nationwide through the Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge, the Energy Department today recognized Cummins Inc., for demonstrating leadership in reducing energy use and costs at its Jamestown Engine Plant in Jamestown, New York. Through the Better Plants Challenge, Cummins committed to a 25 percent reduction in energy intensity by 2016 across 104 facilities, including 19 plants covering more than eight million square feet. November 6, 2014 Coal stocks at electric power plants, which totaled 121 million tons at the end of August, are relatively low in both absolute and days of burn terms relative to recent historical norms. This is true both nationally and in the Upper Midwest. About two-thirds of coal used to generate electric power moves from coal mine to power plant either fully or partially by rail. Power plants in the Upper Midwest operated at very high rates during last winter's extreme cold weather, burning lots of coal. As these plants rebuild their stockpiles, many operators want shipments of coal well above the levels they received in 2013. Issues with delivery by rail are making it more difficult to ship larger volumes of coal and rebuild stockpiles at coal-fired power plants.
